If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re looking to join a network marketing company and you’re doing some due diligence before you do. Before you get involved with a specific company, it’s important to look at every aspect of a company. Even before that, it would probably make sense to identify what network marketing is, and the concept behind it.
What Is Network Marketing (Multilevel Marketing)?
Network marketing, or multilevel marketing, is a business model that is getting more and more popular with many companies today. In a nutshell, it is a way for a company to market their products without utilizing the traditional method of opening a brick-and-mortar retail store. Instead, they leverage a distribution system of people who introduce their products to their family members, friends and acquaintances using word-of-mouth marketing, also known as referral marketing.
This method creates a win-win-win situation for all parties involved. First, for the company, it allows them to market and sell products without spending tens of millions of dollars on opening retail stores. By not opening retail stores, they can also save millions of dollars on hiring, training and maintaining hundreds of employees. In addition, they can also save millions (and even tens of millions) of dollars on various advertising costs.
For the consumer, this method benefits them because they can save money on their purchases. Companies that use network marketing are not spending money on retail expenses and advertising costs. Therefore, they don’t have to mark up their products, giving consumers a nice saving when compared to purchasing the same products in a retail store.
Lastly, for the distributor who is promoting and selling the company’s products, they have an opportunity to earn income, not only from their efforts, but from the collective efforts of everyone on their team, should they decide to build one. This model can be very lucrative since there’s usually no cap on the amount of income that can be earned, and because you’re getting paid on the efforts of hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of people, the income generated can be very significant. In addition, most companies have recognition programs that include incentives like company-paid trips and car bonuses that be earned based on production. Historically, the network marketing industry has created more individual millionaires than any other industry on the planet and the marketing model is now being embraced by many savvy business people.
Picking A Company To Join
Now that you know the concept behind network marketing, it’s time to pick a company to join. There are several things to look at in a company before getting involved. For one, you need to check out the products or services they are selling. Are they products or services you can get behind, believe in and promote? Is there are market for them? Also, is there a ton of competition from other network marketing or traditional companies? Obviously, looking into these questions are important when picking a company to partner with.
Second, you should review the company’s compensation plan. A good rule of thumb when looking into a compensation plan is making sure it is balanced. In other words, does it provide upfront income as well as long-term residual income? Is the compensation plan fair for both new marketers and experienced builders? In addition, you should look at any other incentives like lifestyle bonuses or company stock (if the company is public).
Third, you should consider the timing of the company. There is a long-standing debate on whether or not it is better to go with a start-up company or one that has been around for years and is already established. It’s all up to you and what you’re trying to accomplish.
But by far, the absolute most important thing you should look into is the company itself. You should look at the owner(s) and the corporate team, and identify what their long-term goals are. You should also look into the company’s investors (if there are any) and do your research on them. In addition, you need to check out if the company is financially stable. In my opinion, a strong infrastructure, and experienced leaders with long-term goals at the helm, is critical for long-term success. Everything else is secondary. Who cares if the company has the greatest product or compensation plan if they won’t be around down the road?
My advice is to do a ton of research before joining any company. Google the owners, the products and check out any scam sites to make sure everything is on the up and up. Once you’ve identified that everything is solid and you’ve found a company that feel good about, make sure you partner with a sponsor with a proven track record that will work with you. Of course, you can still be successful without a good sponsor but why not stack the chips in your favor by working with someone who can mentor you and guide you through the process of building a successful business.
If you’re seriously thinking about starting your own home business, then getting involved in the network marketing industry is something you should really consider. Just do your research first, find a good company and products you can get excited about. Then partner with a solid sponsor who can train and mentor you. Once you’ve done all that, just get to work and you can very well be on your way to building a prosperous home business.
