Being heavily involved in the MLM Industry over the last 15 years, I’ve been able to see and observe a lot of different leaders and systems. Some good, and some not so good. But even though times have changed, and new technology has changed the landscape of Network Marketing, there are a handful of time-tested, time-proven principles that hasn’t changed, and will never change.
In the following blog post, I’ve going to cover 3 principles that are just as relevant today, as they were 20-30 years ago. And if you’re building an MLM, or Network Marketing, business, these principles will help you, and can can potentially cause the breakthrough you need to succeed. In addition to that, I’ll give you a few hot tips on how you can apply them to your business.
MLM Principle #1 – Focus On Massive Exposures, It’s The Most Important Thing In Business
Make no mistake about it, in order to get your business up and running, you have to focus on massive exposures. If you’ve been around for a while and you want to create a new wave of momentum, the most important thing you can do is to re-focus on getting massive exposures to your business. The question you need to ask yourself daily is: “How many new people did I get to look at a full presentation today?” That is the only thing that matters.
Most marketers do everything in their power to do everything except get massive exposures. Why? Because it takes work and you need to get out of your comfort zone. It’s more comfortable to get on the company website and read every single word on it. It’s more comfortable to try to research everything you can on the company’s product. It’s more comfortable to play around with websites. The problem is in Network Marketing (and in everything else in life when you think about it), the comfortable activities don’t pay you and often lead to no results. It’s the uncomfortable activities that pay you the biggest dividends and give you massive results. If you want to succeed, you have to monitor how many new people are being exposed to your business.
Hot Tip – If you have an existing list already, you’re obviously going to have a major advantage when it comes to getting your business going. However, even if you don’t have a list, there are still things you can do to massively expose people to your program…
Start doing webinars once or twice a week, and do everything in your power to personally get 10-30 people on your webinars. It’s going to take work so if you’re not willing to work on your business and on your goals, then you should just quit now.
Once you personally enroll a new rep, take some time to launch them and help put together a list of people they know. If they are a marketer and have an existing email list already, even better. Launch their business by doing a webinar for them that THEY have to fill up with 10-30 people. If you can do this process and can get 3 or 4 new reps a week packing out webinars, and you’re continually do your own webinar (since you’re going to lead by example), you’ll be exposing a massive amount of people, and good things are going to start to happen.
If you are an offline marketer and you love to do meetings, you can duplicate the same process above and use PBRs/Group Meetings and/or Group Conference Calls. It takes a little bit more work since you have to get people out to the event, instead of them attending a webinar, so you might have to invite more people to get the same amount of guests. But with that said, when you’re physically in front of someone, and you’re doing a simple presentation, chances are you’ll be able to duplicate people faster. Why? Because people can see themselves inviting a few people out somewhere and sharing a simple presentation more than they can see themselves doing a super slick webinar, especially if they are intimidated by technology and the Internet.
In my opinion, the smart thing to do is to take the best of both worlds and do both online webinars and offline meetings (assuming your MLM product is relevant to the offline world). For example, for people that you know that aren’t local to you, and you can’t get them to a local event… simply invite them to a webinar so they can get exposed to your opportunity.
Even if you wanted to buy a product or service, chances are you’re not going to buy it from someone you don’t like. If you think someone is a jerk, you’re probably going to look for someone else to buy the very same product you could have bought from him. Make no mistake about it, you’re not going to get anyone to buy from you, or join you, if you can’t get them to like you. So instead of trying to shove your comp plan or product down your prospect’s throat, you’ll get much farther if you take the time to have a real conversation with them and ask them what they want before you even mention andy details your business.
Get real good at building rapport and developing relationships, or you’ll have a hard time building your business even if you have the greatest product and compensation plan known to man.
This is why spam doesn’t work. I get spammed all the time via email, Facebook and I even get spam texts now. But you know what I do when I get spam messages? I do what you probably do… I delete them. I’ve never once joined someone’s MLM business who spammed me and I never will. Why? Because I don’t know who they are, and I have no relationship with them whatsoever. With that said, I have entertained messages and phone calls from people I know, like and respect, and on some occasions I’ve even joined their business.
Hot Tip – Make building relationships with people a priority. I’m all for technology and automated systems, but I don’t think you should send a message or text to someone when you can easily pick up the phone and call them.
Connect with people and you’ll get way better results. For example, if you have a good quality prospect in your local area, take 30 minutes and go grab a cup of coffee with them. That $2 cup of coffee, and the 30 minutes you spend with them, may lead to thousands of reps, not to mention a great friendship.
Because of technology, most people today do everything in their power not to meet people face to face. They feel it takes too much time, or it’s inconvenient, so they’d rather just keep spamming people on Facebook. In my opinion, that’s just stupid.
Of course, I’m not saying you have to run around and meet every single unqualified person you have on your list. But if you’ve sent them 2 or 3 pieces of information and they are fired up and excited, and you know they are a center of influence, you probably won’t be wasting your time with them so go meet them.
Make no mistake about it, building a Network Marketing business (MLM or traditional) takes time. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and get-rich-quick schemes never last. If you want to build something that lasts, it will take time. The faster you accept it, the less frustrated you’ll feel when you’re not a millionaire in your third month. Of course, if you have previous skill-sets, and if you have a strong work ethic, and if you have good mentors that can shave time off your learning curve, it might not take you as long as the average person, but it will still take some time. And it’s OK.
Think about it… even if it takes you 5 years to build a business that pays you $10,000 a month in residual income, how long do you have to work at your job to make $10,000 a month? Learn to put things in perspective and you’ll be able to maintain an even keel over time.
Hot Tip – Make a decision right now that you will actively build your business consistently, and give it a real shot for the next 12 to 36 months. Show up at the events. Plug into conference calls. Personally produce. If you can stay focused on money-making-activities daily and you don’t quit, you’ll be amazed how far you can go in 12 to 36 short months.
